about CLB

Working at Camden Lock Books
Camden Lock Books currently employs one or two part-time booksellers, and the owner who works at the shop most days. Currently we do not have any job vacancies.

Role of the Bookseller at CLB
When we do have vacancies, most of the time your role would be the sole member of staff in the bookshop, serving members of the public at the cash register, showing them where books are, answering their wide-ranging questions, directing them within the shop, answering telephone calls, finding books on the computer system and taking orders. When you are not doing that, there’s plenty of work to be done putting books out on shelves, tidying and rearranging the shop’s stock. There will be a probationary period of up to three months when you will initially have another member of staff working with you and offering you essential training.

Working hours
CLB is open from 8.30am until 7pm Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 12 noon until 5.30pm. Weekdays are split into two shifts, from 8.30am until 2pm and from 1.30pm until 7pm. Saturdays are a single shift.

When we do seek new staff they must be available for an absolute minimum of two shifts per week and ideally able to offer some wider flexibility in times of illness and holidays.

Salary and benefits
The salary starts at the London Living Wage. You would also be entitled to the equivalent of four weeks holiday per calendar year. Additionally you would also be entitled to purchase stock for personal consumption at cost price.

Skills and experience needed
Ideally you should at least have five good GCSE level or equivalent exam passes. You must have some retail experience ideally in a bookshop or similar retail environment.

Reasonable computer skills, accuracy with filing books and using a cash register/credit card machine are essential. The strength is needed in all staff to comfortably open and close the metal shop shutters. Above all we are looking for people who are excellent with customers and keen to convey their enthusiasm for books and literature.
