Original paddle shaped horn-book with printed paper on both sides. Judging by the grain, weight, colour and strength this appears to be a piece of sitka spruce, introduced into the UK in 1831 and commonly used for boxes/crates, furniture, millwork at that time. Alphabet in alternating horizontal lines of 5 or 6 letters of lower and upper cases in a Fat Face type (Designers of such new display faces distorted the Bodoni and Dido types, making them larger and blacker. These type designs, called Fat Face, are now recognized as quintessentially Victorian and one of the most original typographic forms of the century). On the verso are six blocks of 12, 24 or 36 words or phonetics for training young readers in a phonetic system and an italic lower case alphabet at the bottom- each section divided by double lines. The sitka spruce paddle and its paper coverings have been damaged and are worn and exhibiting handling marks from young London schoolchildren, nearly 190 years ago (please see photographs for detailed condition). One of the phonetic words is "POX" (Smallpox is widely considered one of the most lethal of all human pathogens & appears to have become a more common cause of death over the course of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century in London - as its incidence increased, Southern English parishes responded with communal measures that prevented endemicisation; this horn-book provides a testament to the use of early-years education as a continuing and key communal measure. Fortunately, vaccination was developed by Edward Jenner at the very end of the eighteenth century, and reduced smallpox to a relatively minor cause of death in Europe by the mid-nineteenth century). Back in the sixteenth century, English monks began to make hornbooks to help their pupils learn to read. Usually a wooden paddle with an alphabet and a verse glued to the surface, hornbooks derived their name from the piece of transparent horn protecting the verse. We know of hornbooks being in use until the mid-nineteenth century but their heyday was over. By the end of the nineteenth century the hornbook had not only gone out of fashion but surviving examples were extremely rare, as most had either been destroyed or lost. The few that did survive were mainly in the hands of collectors. “The humble hornbook was treated with the full measure of contempt lavished on a thing which has served its purpose. ‘Destroy and forget,’ said everybody, and alas! Everybody did. That a tool which was used by so many generations of children over hundreds of years could be forgotten so easily seems almost impossible, yet it was.” -Andrew W. Tuer History of the horn-book. In 1832 there were 3,339 Methodist Sunday schools in England, with 59,277 teachers and 341,442 pupils. There were also several Wesleyan Methodist day schools in London in 1836 such as Great Queen Street Chapel, Weslyan Methodist School, Lincoln Inns Fields or Great Queen Street Methodist Infant School, 1829-1861. It is certain that this horn-book was once in use at just such an institution.

the-snow-queen-57-of-200-copies-andersen-hans-christian-published-by-paisley-scotland-gleniffer-press-1993-condition-good-hardcover
Andersen, Hans Christian. This entertaining small book contains short snippets of information about the reigns, or fateful feats, of English monarchs from Edward Ironside to George IV (here as Prince of Wales) & veers from savage satire to idealized adoration, offering a refreshingly irreverent overview of British rulers. A typographical masterclass in miniature, originally intended for children, printed in Henri Didot's celebrated microscopic type, comprising Berquin's Variétés, Démoustier's Mythologie, Florian's Mélanges, La Fontaine's Fables, and poetry by Millevoye and Voltaire. In the nineteenth-century world of print, the Didot family were predominant owing to their significant innovations and commercial nous. François Didot established a reputation for typographical perfection, his son, François-Ambroise Didot, created the point system for sizing type, and his son, Firmin Didot, mastered the engraved roundhand. However, one of the greatest Didot family contributions to print can be attributed to Henri Didot, who, aged 66, cut his microscopic type, the miniscule font used in these books & mearuring 2.5pt (on his uncle's scale). The most revered publications using this type are La Rochefoucauld's Maximes (1827) and Horace's Opera omnia (1828), but its invention also produced these miniature books for children. Each [8] printed pages. Chromolithograph card covers and illustrations. Die cut shape books in the form of the Australia, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and England (contemporary gift inscription on blank inner cover of Australia only). 112 x 88mm. Scarce shape books with rhyming verses designed to promote travel to Australia, Canada and South Africa from England, Ireland and Scotland, attributed to M.G. The cover depicts the mainlands with vignettes of largest cities, such as Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, and with two or more cherubic youths in what was considered appropriate dress, such as mining costumes in the gold fields with pickaxes and spades. The illustrations show native animals including kangaroo, emu, roseate cockatoo, bear, ostrich, zebras, giraffes; with Aboriginal people, sheep mustering, a bullock team crossing the bush, hunting, fishing, toboganning, football, cricket, golf, bagpiping, burning kelp, gathering cockles, outspanning while on the trek, & a diamond mine at Kimberley. The rear covers have lists of the counties, states, capitals, towns, rivers and mountains. Muir, Bibliography of Australian children's books, 6688. Vivid depictions from over a hundred years after the first European colonisation of the continents of Australia, Canada and South Africa, targeting new immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland. Few sets available in such fine condition as this- most survivors, with their irregular edges, would, in children's hands, have quickly become quite worn. Abbott, who had taught the young poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, at Portland Academy, pioneered making schools largely self-governing and largely abandoned more traditional disciplinary measures. He advocated education for young women and in 1833 founded the Mount Vernon School in Boston, one of the first institutions for their education in America. The Corner Stone (1834) was Abbott's second work in a series inspired from Mount Vernon School lectures (after the Young Christian); it raised considerable outcry in quarters hostile to Unitarianism, especially in England, where Abbott's emphasis upon practical Christianity was mistakenly thought to cover Arian leanings. The book even became the subject of #73 of the famous Oxford Tracts for the Times by J. H. Newman; although, after their meeting during Abbott's first trip to Europe in 1843, the two men became close friends. In later editions of The Corner Stone Abbott changed certain equivocal passages to prevent further misunderstanding of his views, which were substantially those of the more liberal Evangelicals of his period. 7 libraries with copies of this edition in WorldCat. The Gleniffer Press of Paisley and Wigtown was founded in 1967 by Helen and Ian Macdonald as a hobby private press, producing home and business stationery. By the early 1970s, the press became recognised throughout the world for making miniature books, continuing until 2007, when it closed after 40 years. In total, Gleniffer Press produced 57 different titles, in 13,500 little books, all hand-bound. The Macdonalds were among the founding members of the Miniature Book Society, which still thrives to this day. Solomon prayed that the temple would be a blessing to the people in uniting them in joining with God and sharing in the goals of the Chrisitan faith, many of which aspirations still apply today. John Lewis Linney was a Quaker printer/bookseller from Ripon, the first of a succession of Quaker owners of what would eventually become Sessions of York. Weise in Stuttgart. Pistner also has only eight of the ten German volumes. The German version was known as Miniatur-Bibliothek fur junge Madchen. The publishing house was founded by Gustav Weise, the former co-owner of Julius Weise's court bookstore, in Stuttgart in 1863. John Marshall had published German and French translations of his 'Infant's Library' in London in 1800, and similarly, Gustav Weise probably published his original 1896 Miniatur-Bibliothek fur junge Madchen in Dutch in the same year. In 1921, A. Tuneewa referred to a copy of the German version held in the Odessa State Library, that she attributed to the writer Klara Reichner, a nom de plume for German author Klara Jochner (1843-1913). Spielmann described his odd volume as "One of the very rare volumes of the 'Gigantick Histories' printed for subscribers only, which are among the earliest English children's books dealing with non-religious matters". "The most remarkable tiny books of the century were perhaps the children's books published by Thomas Boreman in London in the early 1740's... with their lists of child subscribers and attractive woodcut illustrations, simple texts and interesting London subjects, they must have made ideal presents for young people, fashioned as they were more for pleasure and entertainment than moral improvement and instruction. It is generally assumed that Boreman was not only the publisher but also the author of these charming volumes which have of late not nly become excessively rare but also very expensive" (Bondy, 21). Boreman derived much of the content from Strype's edition of John Stow's 1720 'Survey' and William Maitland's 1739 ' History and Survey of london'. The only complete set of Westminster Abbey that seems to have been recorded in ABPC was in 2007. Two contemporary vertical ink lines on page vi of the subscribers' list. Inner gilt dentelles.
