Provenance: "Martha Downs, the gift of her sister, Jane". The great religious revival which took place during the 19th century, especially in England, went hand in hand with a flood of devotional books, many of them in miniature format. Some of them were intended both for children and an adult readership. Very popular were the publications issued by the Religious Tract Society in London. As most of them were undated, any dates given here are estimates. A tiny volume, enchantingly entitled Small Rain upon the Tender Herb, belongs to the best-loved miniature books and was obviously much treasured by our Victorian ancestors. The first edition appeared in the early 1830's and many subsequent editions were printed at least up to the 39th edition. The earlier editions were finely printed by C. Whittingham at Chiswick. The type used is 5-point. The contents consist of short Bible extracts for every day of the year and even include the 29th of February (Bondy, 127). Spielmann, 466. Bryce offered their dictionaries in a choice of Metal cases (1s.3d.), Tartan (1s.6d.), Yapped leather (2s.0d.), Silver gilt (2s.6d.), Gilt or engraved (3s.6d.) & Silver hallmarked locket (7s.6d.) -this example was the most costly and by far the hardest to find. Contemporary yapp-style, black morocco, spine with gilt lettering within gilt circle -Holy Bible - all edges gilt David Bryce (1845-1923) was one of the world's most prolific and successful makers of miniature books, entering the book trade at the age of 17 when he was made a partner in his father's publishing house, later becaming sole proprietor on his father's death in 1870. Shortly after this, he started producing the miniature books that were to make him famous. David Bryce & Sons of Glasgow was took an active interest around the turn of the 19th century in the latest technological advances in photolithography and electroplates to allow larger volumes to be reduced to the smallest possible size. Their miniature publications have been prized for their clarity and legibility. With Glasgow University Press, Bryce issued the earliest complete miniature Bible in 1896, at the time the smallest complete bible ever printed, a reduced facsimile of the Oxford sextodecimo edition. Many of them were presented to serving soldiers throughout the British Empire, easily carried in the Boer War campaigns at that time & later in the First World War. Bondy, 108. Garbett, 20. All edges red. Original cream endpapers. 30 x 46 mm. Original khaki buckram (some light soiling; spine slightly twisted and gatherings minutely sprung out of perfect alignment; inner hinges cracked but firm). Holy Bible stamped in gilt on spine (faded). Original magnifier in a pocket at the back. Originally retailed for a shilling. This copy has been used and more likely than not, been taken to France or Belgium during the First world War. The hard-wearing dull coloured buckram was deliberately selected for camouflage and to last the length of a campaign - this miniature bible weighs one ounce and was perfectly sized to be carried in a soldier's pocket. The binding was not used on any other Bryce edition, to my knowledge. Bondy described the Allies Bible as much rarer than the other variants. Bondy, 110. Garbett, 22. Welsh, 564. OCLC, 84968988.
