With wonderful ink birthday gift dedication in fine hand and dated 1872, from Sir Malby Crofton, 3rd Baronet (1857 1926) and 4 members of his family to his wife at the family seat, Longford House, Co. Sligo. Sir Malby was from a landowning Anglo-Irish noble family living in Crofton House (at Mote Park)-an imposing neo-classical house and the most impressive of its type built in Co. Roscommon. Full black morocco binding. Spine gilt ruled in 5 compartments with gilt decorations and titling. Both covers elaborately blind tooled , the upper board with gilt tooling, including a series of 14 tiny maltese cross motifs and a striking central French ivory inlaid panel (very slightly curling up at edges with 139 years of ageing), bordered in fine gilt scroll-work and stamped in gilt, blue and red decorative titling. The binding has some minor blemishes including a short vertical split within the ivorine panel. The unusual binding has a Victorian finesse and charm and a noble provenance. Printed upon the very thinnest Oxford India Paper ever made, and with twenty-eight full-page illustrations of biblical scenes by C. B. Birch, A.R.A. Spine slightly cracked. Near contemporary inscription on front free endpaper. Some pages mildly thumbed. The exact size of the page is 42mm x 28mm. Contemporary straight-grained, burgundy morocco, covers with ornamental scrolling gilt border surrounding a central gilt lozenge with gilt lettered center (Illustrated Miniature Bible ), spine gilt, all edges yellow (marginal edge wear); contemporary gold-painted metal copyright marked Jahncke's Patent Tin Prince of Wales feathers and Thistles with ornamental engraving of Jahncke's Patent Tin Prince of Wales feathers and Thistles (exterior gold layer rubbed away), upper cover with removable inlaid red cloth with gilt lettering surrounding a central magnifying glass loop (very slight wear, fading and handling). David Bryce (1845-1923) was one of the world's most prolific and successful makers of miniature books, entering the book trade at the age of 17 when he was made a partner in his father s publishing house. He later became the sole proprietor when his father died in 1870. It was shortly after this event that he started producing the miniature books that were to make him famous. David Bryce & Sons of Glasgow was active around the turn of the 19th century; & took an active interest in the latest technological advances in photolithography and electroplates to allow larger volumes to be reduced to the smallest imaginable size. The result is that their miniature publications are prized for the clarity and legibility of their texts. With the aid of Glasgow University Press, the firm issued the earliest complete miniature Bible in 1896, at the time the smallest complete bible ever printed; it comprised 876 pages printed on the finest India paper, measuring just over 1 inch square and was a reduced facsimile of the Oxford sextodecimo edition. David Bryce produced these tiny Bibles and many were presented to serving soldiers throughout the British Empire, easily carried on campaigns, including The Boer War which was being waged at that time with many later carried by soldiers in the First World War. They also published a 1901 reprint and also issued it in a specific binding as a souvenir of the Glasgow International Exhibition at Kelvingrove. All copies were sold with a small magnifying glass. Dante was born in Florence in 1265. The Alighieri family came from a branch of the house of Elisei, founded by the wife of Cacciaguida, a warrior who died in the Second Crusade. Dante's parents (Alighiero di Bellincione Alighieri and Bella di Abati) were minor nobility, so he grew up among the aristocracy. Florence was utterly central to his life, but he ended up in exile & Dante died prematurely in Ravenna. However, it was during his exile that he began writing his great work The Divine Comedy. Dante chose the title because even though it begins tragically (Inferno), it ends pleasantly (Paradiso). The three-part epic poem was first published in 1320. Welsh, 2170. The Gleniffer Press of Paisley and Wigtown was founded in 1967 by Helen and Ian Macdonald as a hobby private press, producing home and business stationery. By the early 1970s, the press became recognised throughout the world for making miniature books, continuing until 2007, when it closed after 40 years. In total, Gleniffer Press produced 57 different titles, in 13,500 little books, all hand-bound. The Macdonalds were among the founding members of the Miniature Book Society, which still thrives to this day. Complete harlequin set of miniature editions with Latin texts published by Carl Poppo Fröbel, 1786-1824; black printed text in red borders, individually designed for each volume (minimally spotted; some corners creased; clean copies). The eight books are: 1/ Kaspar van Baerle, aka Caspar Barlaeus, 1584-1648. Basia Elegantiae Studiosis , 1821. [2], 60 pp. 7/ Joannes Nicolai Secundus, 1511-1536. Sylvae Deambulaturis Patefactae , 1822. vi, 89 pp. 8/ Marco Girolamo Vida, 1485-1566. Schacchia ludus [on the game of chess ] quem ludendi peritis una cum Iac. Balde Ludo Palamedis , 1820. iv, half-title, [1], 98 pp. All edges gilt. 92 x 61 mm. Elegant green, blue & cream printed card binding with ornamental borders (slightly rubbed). Housed in custom slipcase with black cloth. Each of these editions were considered to be pre-eminent texts - individual volumes were also published in parallel in small octavo editions. After the eighth volume of the miniature edition, published in 1823, and finally with Froebel's death in 1824, the series finally came to an end. Froebel had resigned from his schoolmasters position in 1815 to purchase the Hofbuchdruckerei in Rudolstadt from Caspar Freyschmidt. His diligently printed volumes displayed elegant type, good quality paper and correct impressions. Froebel's knowledge of ancient and modern languages was also an advantage, because he was able to do the proofreading carefully, even correcting the authors. The Hofbuchdruckerei was censorship- free. The Prussian chamberlain Johann Georg Scheffner had his memoirs, which had been abridged by the censor Ernst Karl Wieland , reprinted by Froebel in Rudolstadt, with an appendix containing the passages that had fallen victim to censorship. He also printed the Katzensprung von Frankfurt a. M. to Munich , in the autumn of 1820 , in which Christian August Fischer attacked the Bavarian Minister Maximilian Emanuel von Lerchenfeld, causing the publisher Georg Hartknoch to receive 8 days in prison & fine of 20 thalers and the author 3 years in prison, but Carl Poppo Fröbel remained unpunished because he was under foreign jurisdiction. No copies of the 8 books in WorldCat apart from Schacchia ludus -7 copies. Not in Bondy, nor Spielmann. Welsh, 1687, 3299, 5437, 6221, 6223, 6946. Nauroy, 75-6. E.O.B., 1840, Jenaische Allgemeine Zeitung (36, 225ff). Very rare complete.
