After taking on a range of characters and roles in the "United Film Stills", which explored cinematic conventions and cliches, Sherman was commissioned by Ingrid Sischy to produce the twelve Centerfolds for "Artforum".Their horizontal format refers to the centerfolds in men's erotic magazines. These women all seem in various states of emotion. Some seem like they're daydreaming, others seem terrified or angry. And they're never looking at the camera. Sisschy was anxious that the images might be misunderstood and declined to publish them. This book contains a new essay by Lisa Phillips and three original reviews of the Centerfolds from 1981.
