Measurement of the engraved part 45.3 x 72 cm. Very mild marginal foxing. Mounted, glazed and framed in attractive, period style frame (104 x 75 cm). Extracted from Antoine Ignace MELLING s Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore , [Paris, Treuttel et Würtz, 1819] with a vertical crease where it was originally folded into the folio volume. Stunning hand-coloured delineation of the Hippodrome Square of Istanbul, the city's skyline, & members of Ottoman society in the foreground (in the background the Obelisks of the Byzantine Emperors Theodosius II and Constantine VII & on the left the Mosque of Sultan Ahmed I) Melling (1763-1831), having studied architecture, painting and mathematics, went to the Italy and Egypt at the age of nineteen. In 1784, Melling moved to Istanbul as attaché to the Russian Embassy and remained in Constantinople for eighteen years. He was architect to Sultan Selim III and his sister Hatice, with whom he maintained a close relationship. Melling in 1795 designed the gardens and the interior of Hatice Sultan's palace in Ortaköy, and the interior of the newly built palace in Defterdar Burnu, in neoclassical style, as well as jewellery and clothes for the Turkish court. He was consequently granted access to the Sultan's palaces, including the Harem, Melling's sketches of which provided the earliest interior views that soon unfolded before the eyes of Europeans in an unparallelled way( Melling saw Istanbul as an Ottoman citizen but was able to paint it as an insightful Western European). Having completed various projects for Selim III, Melling returned to Paris in 1803. In order to prepare the publication of his drawings, Melling set up an engraving studio, with the assistance of the best engravers of the time. The excellent quality of this edition, in select paper, realized by the best typographers of the time was achieved thanks to Melling's diligence, an impeccable engraving and the originality of the drawings. In order to write the accompanying texts Melling worked and consulted with Lechevalier, P. Deval, Pouquevile, Lacretelle, Choiseul-Gouffier, Barbie de Bocage and others. Production did not start until 1809 and was not completed until 1819 after the appearance of the thirteenth livraison. Later on, coloured versions of the engravings were also published. The outstanding success of the exhibitions on which the work was based earned Melling the title of Painter to the Empress Josephine, Napoleon's wife. Individual prints, least of all the most attractive views such as this, infrequently appear for re-sale. Original paddle shaped horn-book with printed paper on both sides. Judging by the grain, weight, colour and strength this appears to be a piece of sitka spruce, introduced into the UK in 1831 and commonly used for boxes/crates, furniture, millwork at that time. Alphabet in alternating horizontal lines of 5 or 6 letters of lower and upper cases in a Fat Face type (Designers of such new display faces distorted the Bodoni and Dido types, making them larger and blacker. These type designs, called Fat Face, are now recognized as quintessentially Victorian and one of the most original typographic forms of the century). On the verso are six blocks of 12, 24 or 36 words or phonetics for training young readers in a phonetic system and an italic lower case alphabet at the bottom- each section divided by double lines. The sitka spruce paddle and its paper coverings have been damaged and are worn and exhibiting handling marks from young London schoolchildren, nearly 190 years ago (please see photographs for detailed condition). One of the phonetic words is "POX" (Smallpox is widely considered one of the most lethal of all human pathogens & appears to have become a more common cause of death over the course of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century in London - as its incidence increased, Southern English parishes responded with communal measures that prevented endemicisation; this horn-book provides a testament to the use of early-years education as a continuing and key communal measure. Fortunately, vaccination was developed by Edward Jenner at the very end of the eighteenth century, and reduced smallpox to a relatively minor cause of death in Europe by the mid-nineteenth century). Back in the sixteenth century, English monks began to make hornbooks to help their pupils learn to read. Usually a wooden paddle with an alphabet and a verse glued to the surface, hornbooks derived their name from the piece of transparent horn protecting the verse. We know of hornbooks being in use until the mid-nineteenth century but their heyday was over. By the end of the nineteenth century the hornbook had not only gone out of fashion but surviving examples were extremely rare, as most had either been destroyed or lost. The few that did survive were mainly in the hands of collectors. “The humble hornbook was treated with the full measure of contempt lavished on a thing which has served its purpose. ‘Destroy and forget,’ said everybody, and alas! Everybody did. That a tool which was used by so many generations of children over hundreds of years could be forgotten so easily seems almost impossible, yet it was.” -Andrew W. Tuer History of the horn-book. In 1832 there were 3,339 Methodist Sunday schools in England, with 59,277 teachers and 341,442 pupils. There were also several Wesleyan Methodist day schools in London in 1836 such as Great Queen Street Chapel, Weslyan Methodist School, Lincoln Inns Fields or Great Queen Street Methodist Infant School, 1829-1861. It is certain that this horn-book was once in use at just such an institution.

bryces-thumb-english-dictionary-besides-the-ordinary-and-newest-words-in-the-language-short-explanations-of-a-large-number-of-scientific-philosophical-literary-and-technical-terms-published-by-david-bryce-and-sons-glasgow-fair-hardcover
Bryce's Thumb English Dictionary: besides the ordinary and newest words in the language short explanations of a large number of scientific, philosophical, literary, and technical terms. Publisher's full crimson red soft morocco binding, spines lettered & numbered in gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of a few volumes. Short wormhole on hinge of Vol. x Presented in charming , original, Japanned stand. Lacquered in red with gold and black cranes and exotic flowers in relief hand shellacked, painted and varnished on either end (some slight wear and patination to the ends). Japanning is a type of finish that originated as a European imitation of Asian lacquerwork that, by the 1880s, was an industry in decline due to changes in fashion and taste. Still an elegant way to have displayed the complete 13 volumes of the Bard's works anywhere from the library desktop, to the dressing-table. Bradbury, Agnew & Co., from 1872, at 10 Bouverie Street, was founded in 1872 when Frederick Moule Evans (1832-1902) left Bradbury, Evans and Co., the firm he had jointly managed with William Hardwick Bradbury (1832-1892) since 1865 when their fathers, who had founded the firm in 1830 as Bradbury and Evans, retired. The Agnew art dealer family, into which both W. H. Bradbury and his sister, Edith, had married, had brought new capital into Bradbury, Evans and Co. in 1865. This injection of capital saw William Agnew (1825-1910) and his brothers Thomas (b 1827) and John Henry became partners when Bradbury, Agnew and Co. was founded. The new firm continued to publish Household Words, Once a Week, and Punch but limited their overall publication of titles to just Shakespeare, the Bible, some archaeology and fox-hunting titles and a few others such as Sylviculture , George Du Maurier, & Theophile Gautier. More frequently found in a close fitting cloth or leather slipcase, this original displayed set is a rare survivor. Engraved title. Each page with elaborately illustrated vignette borders. All edges black (very slightly abraded). Finely tooled inner gilt dentelles. Black moire silk doublures (very slightly wrinkled, as usual). Purple silk page marker. 12.5 x 16 cm. Near contemporary, unique Gruel "Sombre" full black Niger marocco binding (a pastiche of a Medieval binding). Spine in plain black compartments with raised bands and "Gruel" signed in miniscule at the foot (very slightly rubbed). Boards with original black lacquered steel clasp in the form of a Botonee cross with a trefoil design on the ends and 16 small pearls. The trefoil designs represent the three persons of the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and the pearls symbolize the drops of Christ's blood, which besprinkled the Cross during the Crucifixion. At the top are two gothic stylised fittings for rings to hold the matching black lacquered steel chain of about 20cm. The chain appears to have historically caused a very small nick on the upper edge. But this is an exceptionally interesting 163 year old binding, laden with meaning that intended to resonate with a period four hundred years earlier. It was also fashionable in Restoration England to cover Bibles and prayer books in sombre bindings , that is, in blind-tooled black goatskin, devoid of gilt decoration, often with the edges of the leaves stained black (as this book is), either as an expression of mourning or as a Lenten observance. Such bindings were made in many different workshops & this particular unique Gruel variation was also themed on a girdle book with a small chain looped through two rings at the top of the binding- all that was necessary to make it portable-a rare and intriguing format, so unusual as not often to be seen outside important collections. The girdle book would have been fully supported by a girdle belt, separate from the hose and any upper garments. Gruel was one of the most famous and important "fin de siècle" French binders. The Gruel bookbinding firm, founded in 1811, "always had the highest reputation .for initiative in artistic matters, as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements" ["Bookbinders and their Craft", Prideaux]. The list of binders who trained at the Gruel atelier is the most distinguished in Europe. Léon Gruel (1841-1923), who took over the firm in 1891, was the single most famous person associated with the bindery. He led the challenge to integrate new innovations and ideas in the decoration of modern bindings. This highly collectable Paroissien is a design hybrid, reflective of historic bindings, but yet very much of the mid to late nineteenth century. James Hayday (1796-1872) was one of the most inventive binders of the 19th century and one of the few to be deemed worthy of an entry in the Dictionary of National Biography; books bound by him became and still are considerably sought after. Edward Gardner of the Oxford Warehouse, 7 Paternoster Row, secured Hayday's services exclusively for Oxford University Press publications (of which this is one). Hayday was specifically engaged by Gardner to bind his copies of the finely printed, small format 'Oxford' Bibles, and his output ranged from the basic plain dark hard-grained morocco trade bindings to the finely finished and worked up examples seen here, presumably for the luxury end of the market. William Pickering, bookseller, of 57 Chancery Lane, additionally introduced Hayday to many wealthy patrons. After entering into a brief partnership with Mr. Boyce, a finisher, he again started on his own account at 31 Little Queen Street. Unable to compete with other and cheaper binders, he was adjudicated a bankrupt on 10 June 1861. George Kirkby Junior (1773-1857) was the owner of the Kentish Gazette along with Charles Petman Rouse, and James Lawrence. James Hervey (1714-1758), Calvinist Anglican divine (and former Oxford Methodist), following several minor clerical appointments in 1740 he became the curate of Bideford, North Devon, where he started work on the drafts of his famous Meditations and Reflections. The latter works appeared in 1745-1746, to be followed in 1747 by his Contemplation upon the night and other works. His popular Meditations Among the Tombs was published in 1746 and it was often reprinted. The subject of the book is death, and the author dwells particularly on the grief caused by early death, and on the eventual re-uniting of the parted in heaven. Hervey had a lasting impact on art through William Blake, who was an admirer of his. Blake painted Epitome of James Hervey's Meditations among the Tombs between 1820 and 1825.Hervey is also mentioned in Blake's work as one of the holy guards to the 'four-fold gate', and his influence on Blake's poem The Tyger has also been noted. Hervey was also a friend and correspondent of John Wesley, founder of Methodism. Examples of Hervey's shorthand are not common, but there is a copy of a 1795 Thomas Hervey Bible in Shorthand at the Archives and Manuscript Department, Pitts Theology Library, Emory University. This is a unique Napoleonic era example of an entire work in shorthand, preserved in a charming contemporary full morocco binding. Printed upon the very thinnest Oxford India Paper ever made, and with twenty-eight full-page illustrations of biblical scenes by C. B. Birch, A.R.A. Spine slightly cracked. Near contemporary inscription on front free endpaper. Some pages mildly thumbed. The exact size of the page is 42mm x 28mm. Contemporary straight-grained, burgundy morocco, covers with ornamental scrolling gilt border surrounding a central gilt lozenge with gilt lettered center (Illustrated Miniature Bible ), spine gilt, all edges yellow (marginal edge wear); contemporary gold-painted metal copyright marked Jahncke's Patent Tin Prince of Wales feathers and Thistles with ornamental engraving of Jahncke's Patent Tin Prince of Wales feathers and Thistles (exterior gold layer rubbed away), upper cover with removable inlaid red cloth with gilt lettering surrounding a central magnifying glass loop (very slight wear, fading and handling). David Bryce (1845-1923) was one of the world's most prolific and successful makers of miniature books, entering the book trade at the age of 17 when he was made a partner in his father s publishing house. He later became the sole proprietor when his father died in 1870. It was shortly after this event that he started producing the miniature books that were to make him famous. David Bryce & Sons of Glasgow was active around the turn of the 19th century; & took an active interest in the latest technological advances in photolithography and electroplates to allow larger volumes to be reduced to the smallest imaginable size. The result is that their miniature publications are prized for the clarity and legibility of their texts. With the aid of Glasgow University Press, the firm issued the earliest complete miniature Bible in 1896, at the time the smallest complete bible ever printed; it comprised 876 pages printed on the finest India paper, measuring just over 1 inch square and was a reduced facsimile of the Oxford sextodecimo edition. David Bryce produced these tiny Bibles and many were presented to serving soldiers throughout the British Empire, easily carried on campaigns, including The Boer War which was being waged at that time with many later carried by soldiers in the First World War. They also published a 1901 reprint and also issued it in a specific binding as a souvenir of the Glasgow International Exhibition at Kelvingrove. All copies were sold with a small magnifying glass. As well as Great Exhibition medals, by 1898 Hogarth & Hayes (who claimed they were established in 1837 this is technically not true as they were Banks, Son & Co at that point) were supplying a number of Royals as well as the Government Offices. Hogarth & Hayes were well known for producing fine pencils that now are rarely found in a complete set. WorldCat locates just two copies of this book (and at least one of the two known copies does not have the Mauchline ware transfers) in the Victoria & Albert Museum and in the National Library of Scotland. A rare book, with a collectable binding and a highly unusual bookbinders ticket perhaps uniquely linking it to a pre-eminent pencil works- a surprising survivor of local history and of hand-made tourist gift ware. Probably the earliest imprint of the best known miniature thumb bible & a very close copy of the J.Harris edition. Elizabeth Newberry was the widow of Francis who was nephew of John Newberry (hugely successful publisher and promoter of children's books). A charming copy of this first appearance of Elizabeth Newbery’s enormously popular Bible in Miniature. Although this is the first edition to have the Newbery name in the imprint, it was effectively a new edition of Harris’ miniature bible first printed in 1778, which in turn was based on earlier printings by W. Harris as early as 1771. Following J. Harris’ original closely, the text was entirely reset but was almost word for word the same as Harris’, with the same number of pages, a similar title and fly-title for the New Testament and with engravings of the same subjects: creation,Adam and Eve, Moses, the birth of Christ, the Epiphany etc. The print run must have been considerable as it was still listed as for sale in 1800, at the original published price of 1s, and it is one of the easiest thumb bibles to find today. It was reprinted well into the nineteenth century by the Newbery family and in collaborative editions with Harris, Darton and Harvey. This issue has the page numbers enclosed within brackets and has no imprint at the end of the text, simply concluding with the ‘Finis’ on p. 256. Some rarer issues contain the imprint ‘Crowder & Hemsted, Printers,Warwick-Square’ or simply ‘Hemsted, Printer’.This issue does have the mistake ‘miniuture’ to the title, which was later corrected; but the reworked plate of the engraving of Adam and Eve, at p. 25, with a tree bearing no apples. Copies vary in size and binding. They were issued in plain calf, crimson morocco with gilt tooling and a central onlay in black or dark green, with the sacred monogram (as this copy, which has the onlay in black) and in green morocco with gilt tooling and crimson central onlay. Dante was born in Florence in 1265. The Alighieri family came from a branch of the house of Elisei, founded by the wife of Cacciaguida, a warrior who died in the Second Crusade. Dante's parents (Alighiero di Bellincione Alighieri and Bella di Abati) were minor nobility, so he grew up among the aristocracy. Florence was utterly central to his life, but he ended up in exile & Dante died prematurely in Ravenna. However, it was during his exile that he began writing his great work The Divine Comedy. Dante chose the title because even though it begins tragically (Inferno), it ends pleasantly (Paradiso). The three-part epic poem was first published in 1320. Welsh, 2170. This is a miniature edition of the original moral tale that was later followed by sequels, The Dairyman's Cottage and The Conversion of the Dairyman's Daughter. It had a remarkably wide distribution and influence. It was a narrative of the true experience of Elizabeth Wallbridge, who was the person after whom the book was named. Elizabeth Wallbridge was born, lived and died in the Parish of Arreton, Isle of Wight, England. Her parents although worthy were of the lowly ranks of the poor, and their children were put to service at an early age. The author of the narrative was Rev. Legh Richmond, a religious writer of the period, who was the curate of the neighbouring parish of Brading. According to the account in the book, Miss Wallbridge's life until the age of 26 was of the most worldly character. Never immoral, she was willful, proud, selfish and irreligious. Her life was, however, transformed by a sermon and she became very devout. With exceptional strength of mind, a retentive memory, the mastery of a few religious classics and enforced leisure because of illness, she devoted time and strength to the study of the Bible in which she became remarkably proficient. Miss Wallbridge, after a lingering sickness of a year and a half, died May 30, 1801, at the age of 31 years. During her illness Rev. Richmond often visited her and talked with her, and these discussions inspired him to write the book. Scarce in commerce. Bondy, 129. Welsh, 6008. A typographical masterclass in miniature, originally intended for children, printed in Henri Didot's celebrated microscopic type, comprising Berquin's Variétés, Démoustier's Mythologie, Florian's Mélanges, La Fontaine's Fables, and poetry by Millevoye and Voltaire. In the nineteenth-century world of print, the Didot family were predominant owing to their significant innovations and commercial nous. François Didot established a reputation for typographical perfection, his son, François-Ambroise Didot, created the point system for sizing type, and his son, Firmin Didot, mastered the engraved roundhand. However, one of the greatest Didot family contributions to print can be attributed to Henri Didot, who, aged 66, cut his microscopic type, the miniscule font used in these books & mearuring 2.5pt (on his uncle's scale). The most revered publications using this type are La Rochefoucauld's Maximes (1827) and Horace's Opera omnia (1828), but its invention also produced these miniature books for children. Provenance: "Martha Downs, the gift of her sister, Jane". The great religious revival which took place during the 19th century, especially in England, went hand in hand with a flood of devotional books, many of them in miniature format. Some of them were intended both for children and an adult readership. Very popular were the publications issued by the Religious Tract Society in London. As most of them were undated, any dates given here are estimates. A tiny volume, enchantingly entitled Small Rain upon the Tender Herb, belongs to the best-loved miniature books and was obviously much treasured by our Victorian ancestors. The first edition appeared in the early 1830's and many subsequent editions were printed at least up to the 39th edition. The earlier editions were finely printed by C. Whittingham at Chiswick. The type used is 5-point. The contents consist of short Bible extracts for every day of the year and even include the 29th of February (Bondy, 127). Spielmann, 466.
