This bilingual book is an investigation into a unique and original iconographic invention by Andrea Mantegna: "Our Lady of Tenderness with the dreamy Child" who, as a devotional image, had inexplicably not yet found widespread recognition. This particular iconography of the "sleeping baby", in the nativity on the lap of the Madonna, now represented in the style of the "Glycophilousa"(Tenderness, which normally underlines the mutual, intimate relationship between mother and child), becomes here instead one-sided - Jesus sleeping: there is no precedent to Mantegna's unique and lasting iconographic creation. The research starts from the direct study of a well-known but unpublished painting with its original "Mantegnesca" in comparison with the painting of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan. Thanks to the X-rays and reflectography made available both by the Poldi Pezzoli Museum and by the private collection, published for the first time here together, it was possible to proceed with the scientific comparison of the two paintings. The volume explores the various aspects of this particular iconographic creation and includes essays by specialists in the sector. MAURIZIO MARINI conducted the historical-artistic study; SIMON BOBAK checked the state of conservation of the unpublished painting; NICHOLAS EASTAUGH oversaw the scientific investigation on "distempere"; CLAUDIO METZGER has verified the origin and summarized the history of the studies of the unpublished Madonna; TIMOTHY NEWBERY studied the "mantegnesca" frame. In closing, a study by EMILIO NEGRO on the three "Forest Tables" and the biographical note by GIORGIA ZATTINI. Curator of the volume and coordinator of the studies is SIRA WALDNER, also the author of the in-depth study on the relationships between frame, votive image and iconographic creation and creator of the innovative and original setting, which drafts the Italian and the English text on two overlapping lines. In this way it is possible to compare the two languages hand in hand, at the same time combining the reference images and the respective notes without having to turn the page or go in search of them, thanks to the loosely inserted reading grid that helps the eye adjust more quickly, obscuring one of the two languages ;in order to aid better concentration on the text.
