Former owner's ink signature on front free endpaper. 13 x 20.5 cm. Contemporary full cloth, burgundy morocco label on spine with gilt titling (lower hinge split, very slightly marked and rubbed). Probable provenance: Robert Peter Fleming (1907-1971) who travelled the world partly as an officer in WWII, serving in Norway in 1940, in Greece in 1941 and subsequently in Burma, & India earning the Order of the Cloud and Banner from the Chinese government. Publications include Brazilian Adventure (1933), News from Tartary (1936), and The Sixth Column: A Singular Tale of Our Times (1952). Peter Fleming was the elder brother of Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, and his achievements are remebered by the Peter Fleming Award given by the Royal Geographic Society to a "research project that seeks to advance geographical science". The author and sometime curate Robert Walsh (1772 - 1852) published a History of the City of Dublin in 1815 and went on to write several other books, including Notices of Brazil (1830). This is one of three books in which Contstantinople figures, and this one, like the others, was favourably reviewed. The Eclectic Review pronounced it "unpretending and delightful," with" distinct and extensive information," and concludes that "the most interesting people whom the author met with in his journey, are the Saxon refugees of the Transylvanian heptarchy, of whose history and manners he gives us an amusing account".
