Tall 8vo., original blue cloth, with gilt pictorial decoration on upper cover (very slight wear), xiv, 274pp. Colour frontispiece, 60 plates and, two folding maps (including one in colour at rear). Some minor rubbing, a very good copy.  Sporadic very light foxing, especially free endpapers.  Very slight lean in binding. The author has done for northern Siam what "P.A. Thompson did for Southern Siam in "Lotus Land." To provide an account of northern Siam; the book is divided into the following sections; Historical, Topographical and Ethnological. A comprehensive and interesting study of the people and culture of northern Siam. With former owner's ink signature on front free endpaper, this copy, purchased from the collection of Anthony Christie, former Secretary of the Royal Anthropological Institute, London, was owned by James Philip Mills: 1890-1960, member of the Indian Civil Service who published a number of monographs on Naga peoples in the 1920s. Mills was in 1930 named Honorary Director of Ethnography for Assam and in 1942 was awarded the Rivers Memorial Medal of the Royal Anthropological Institute for fieldwork among the Nagas of Assam. Mills retired from the Indian Civil Service in 1947, and the following year was appointed Reader in the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. From 1951 to 1953 he served as President of the Royal Anthropological Institute from 1951 to 1953. He retired from SOAS in 1955 and donated important collections to the Pitt Rivers Museum of the University of Oxford.
