xix, 198 pp. With photographic portrait frontispiece, 20 plates, folding colour map (at rear), many illustrations and sketches by the author. Minor closed tear to folding map (with no loss). Former owners' signatures on half title page and Esplanade Family Hotel, Minehead inscribed on the title page. Black titles, gold colour boards. Spine and edges rubbed, as usual. Presentation stamp on title page stating "sample copy with the publisher's compliments". A classic account of Western Australia at the time of the Collgardie gold rush. Julius Mendes Price (1857-1924) journalist, illustrator and special artist to the "Illustrated London News", as a correspondent covered the Bechuanaland Campaign. the Greco-Turkish war, the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War. He describes this book, regarded as one of the best reports on the early Western Australian gold fields, as a "brief record of my journey over a continent which until recent developments was a comparatively little known section of the great British Empire".
