Contemporary inscription on front cover, "Dear little Esther". 60 x 90mm. Salmon pink printed wrappers with charming woodcut engraved front cover/title page with the title and publisher within a bucolic scene with an older girl reading to a younger boy, both seated, with a cottage and garden gate in the distance. On the back cover with printed border and floral cornerpieces, the 18 line poem "There was a lonely ark That sail'd o'er waters dark" by the American author Lydia Huntley Sigourney (1791-1865) that first was published in her Poetry for Children (1836).
