Circa 1840. [2], iv, 64 printed pages (mild foxing throughout). Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. All edges gilt. Original pale yellow endpapers. Modern printed ex-libris label on front paste-down endpaper. 58 x 74mm. Original publisher's dark navy morocco (very slightly rubbed; inner hinge cracked but still firm), with gilt titling to the upper cover. Stories, poems, essays for children and young people - a poem 'On a Pen', and prose on the 'Art of printing' and 'Manufactureof Paper'. Date of publication from L.W. Bondy; D.V. Welsh (Miniature books, no. 4468-4469) has two entries for this work, both supposedly with 124 pages (?), dating one '[ca. 1830]' and the other '[ca. 1855].' Leo S. Olschki (Firm) (Catalogue 133, no. 104) gives: '(c. 1855).' Darton & Clark were supposedly in business between 1838 and 1845. Provenance: Steven St. Clair Smallwood- a well-known fore-edge painter. Welsh, 4469. WorldCat locates only two copies (Indiana and Virginia Univesity Libraries). A very scarce children's miniature book in very collectable condition. Seller Inventory # 5327
