Common Prayer c.1900
14" x 16" x 4"
Contained in a 'white metal' spring hinged frame that has a chain & ring to the top and could hence have been added to a chatelaine. The Common Prayer itself is in black morocco with all edges gilt and on the front cover the typical 'IHS initials in 'white metal' and at the top of the spine in gilt Common Prayer.
(The insignia "IHS" comes from the Latinized version of the Greek unaouc [ in Greek capitals this would be IHZOYZ or IHSOUS in Latin letters] taking the first
three letters in capitals IHS(ous).
This is the true meaning of IHS, it is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of the Holy Name of Jesus. The insignia is nothing more (and nothing less) than the symbol of the Holy Name.)
Sold by a collector in a public auction at Bonhams, 9th November 2022.
