With bookbinder & bookseller's printed signature on front free endpaper, "A. and F. Denny. 304 Strand". Ownership inscription on recto of preliminary blank of Emily B. C. Perkins. 13 x 19 cm. Contemporary half calf. Spine in six compartments with raised bands, triple gilt fillets, gold floral centrepieces and tooled corner foliate decoration. Gilt lettering on red morocco label. Slightly worn at hinges and corners; some gilding worn at top of spine. This was Alice Zimmern's first published title and an edition of it first appeared in 1887 published by Scott. Her book The Renaissance of Girls' Education (1898) made big contributions to the debate on the education and rights of women in Zimmern's time. Later her Women's Suffrage in Many Lands (1909), which coincided with the Fourth Congress of the International Women's Suffrage Alliance and her Demand and Achievement. The International Women's Suffrage Movement (1912) secured her legacy as a pioneering suffragist. The blue plaque on her house in Hampstead describes her as a "pioneering advocate for women's education and suffrage". Provenance: Emily B. C. Perkins, from Tayvallioh, Argyllshire went on to contribute her personal favouite quotation in 1900 to the publication "Sop as Gach Seid (a Straw from Every Sheaf): A Collection of Favourite Quotations" as follows "Truth is the property of no individual, but is the treasure of all men" (Letters and Social Aims.
