xlviii, 583 printed pages. Very slight browning at the preliminary and final pages. All edges gilt. Cream straight grained, textured endpapers. Inner gilt dentelles. 18.5 x 13 cm. Red morocco spine with five raised bands, each compartment with gilt scottish thistle embossed tooling within circles, stars and dotted line decorations. Solid sycamore boards (possibly from the woods at Abbotsford, as seen before), with Mauchline ware decoration, made in the town of Mauchline by William & Andrew Smith as a tourist souvenir. Decorated on the upper cover in each corner with litho transfers of Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott's [Edinburgh] monument, Holyrood Palalce & Edinburgh Castle; the central oval black and spiral strung inlaid border contains a photographic transfer litho portrait of Sir Walter Scott. On the rear cover in a similar central oval black and spiral strung inlaid border is a photographic transfer litho of Edinburgh Castle and numbers 10-28 Grassmarket, including the Bull Inn and the Carrrier's Warehouse. In each corner are mother of pearl circular decorative bosses/mounts (the top pair larger than those at the bottom). Spine very slightly worn at head and tail. The upper board has a feint short indentation near the top. The street scene is very slightly worn , predominantly to the outer edge. This is the second edition, the first having been published in 1871 and a third edition coming out in 1893. Copies located by COPAC/WORLDCAT at National Library of Scotland and 10 American Libraries.
