Doune Castle's fourteenth century roof is interesting because it was largely lost by 1800, becoming a roofless ruin before significant Victorian restoration by the Earl of Moray rebuilt the timber roofs and interiors in the 1880s. The original roof and structure had been designed to reflect the power of Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and provided the location for grand feasts and gatherings in the magnificent Great Hall. Monty Python and the Holy Grail was set in Doune castle, and it was used as 'Winterfell Castle' in the Game of Thrones series.
