Thirty-two full colour page illustrations as well as numerous brown printed vignettes within text (8 marginal and very short closed tears, 4 with 'invisible' tape repairs). Endpapers and verso of final page with historic paper tape repairs (edges frayed and worn). 28.5 x 22 cm. Original paper covered boards with green cloth spine (inner hinges split but holding firm; worn at head & tail of spine and along edges; corners bumped and worn). Florence K. Upton (1873 - 1922) was an American-born English cartoonist and author most famous for creating the Golliwog character, featured in a series of children's books. The books were written by Florence's mother, Bertha Upton (1849-1912). In 1897, having had two Golliwogg books published, the Uptons decided to try something different with The Vege-Men's Revenge. The story is about a little girl named Poppy who is sent by her mother to collect vegetables in her basket. The book is in three parts and in the first part Poppy meets Herr Carrot and Don Tomato who entice her with 'fair words' to come and see how they grow underground. One of the greatest anthropomorphic classics of the late 19th Century, these wonderfully creative and adaptive illustrations and story line by Florence Upton remain a classic to this day.
