Eight monochrome photos in concertina. Captions in French, Le Théâtre, Notre Dame d'Afrique, La Cathédrale et le Casbah, La Medersa, Le Kursaal, Vue prise de la Jetée, La Nouvelle Poste, and L'Amirauté.  20 x 10 mm. Original white metal repoussé housing, depicting Egyptian pyramids and the Sphinx on upper cover, and star within crescent moon within a decorative border on the lower cover. The hinged, often ornate white metal, silver-plated, or "alpaca" casing has its original catch and loops at either side for attaching to a chain. The new Post Office was built in Algiers in 1910, dating this book from then because it soon became known as the Great Post Office. In an era before instant digital photos, this was a highly portable way to show friends where they had been to, reflecting the 19th-century bourgeois obsession with travel and personal mementos.
