Formerly in the library of George Philip Rigney Pulman (1819-80)-an English antiquary, journalist and writer on fishing. In 1857 Pulman founded Pulman's Weekly News and Advertiser newspapers. Association copy with owner's signature on title page. (9 x 11ins, 225 x 285mm) nicely boound in contemporary half calf, marbled paper covered boards, backstrip gilt ruled, and titled in gilt. Hinges very slightly splitting at top of spine- but the book is holding firm and square. Half-title, vignette title page (Anglo-Saxon Barrows in Greenwich Park), xxviii, 84, with 40 fine plates, printed in colours and hand-finished, drawn and lithographed by J.Basire, grandson of James Basire, mentor to Blake. Some foxing mainly confined to the endpapers, half-title and final leaf of the index. A beautifully illustrated book in very original condition, depicting Jewellery, Pottery, Glassware, decorated Arms, Fibulae, Buckles, Combs, Bronze buckets and Patera, many in bright printed colours by J.Wertheimer in London.
