vi, 280 printed pages. Printed contemporary label on front pastedown endpaper of Laure Secretan (1811-1886) her signature on the front free endpaper. Inner hinges split, but still firm. All edges gilt. 52 x 85 mm. 2.1 X 3.3". Original blue-green straight-grained buckram (very slight wear at hinges & head/tail of spine). Spine with gilt embossed fleurons and titling (spine slightly faded). Abbott, who had taught the young poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, at Portland Academy, pioneered making schools largely self-governing and largely abandoned more traditional disciplinary measures. He advocated education for young women and in 1833 founded the Mount Vernon School in Boston, one of the first institutions for their education in America. Abbot's views were substantially those of the more liberal Evangelicals of his period. Abbott discusses in detail the overall frustration of the Westerners imposing their diplomacy, opium and missionaries on the dismissive Chinese Empire prior to the first Opium War (1839-42).
