Title: My Attainment of the Pole Beng the Record of...

Publisher: The Polar Publishing Co, New York

Publication Date: 1911

Binding: Hardcover

Edition: 1st.

Quarto; xx, 503 pages in original brown pictorial cloth gilt stamping to front cover and spine. Frontis photograph of Cook , 31 black & white photographic plates and  numerous text illustrations.  Contemporary fading ink stamps on title and half title page (possibly owners name?).  Age toning and some brown spots on some pages. Hinges cracked. 19.5 x 26 cm. Original brown cloth. Spine with gilt letterin (head and tail slightly worn). Upper cover with three printed Inuit faces in profile surrounded by gilt lettering and cream border (corners and hinges slightly worn, with short tear near the head of the spine). Cook's original purpose in exploring the region west of Greenland was ostensibly to organize a hunting expedition. Just north of Etah, Cook decided that conditions were good enough for an assault on the North Pole, and set out on his journey over the sea ice with two Eskimo companions, two sledges and 26 dogs. Cook is one of the most controversial figures in the history of polar exploration. The author describes his journey across Ellesmere Island to Axel Heiberg and northwards, as he claims, to the Pole; also included are chapters on the Inuit and their native customs, the ice and snow conditions, and a new design for a sleigh, as well as a lengthy discussion regarding the controversy over his Polar claims of discovery.
