Previous owner's ink name and address on front free endpaper. Pictorial map endpapers. 15 x 22 cm. Original green and black paper covered boards (slightly worn at edges and a few spots). Complete with original similarly decorated dust-jacket- sixth state: $3.50 on bottom corner of front flap, biographical text on rear flap mentions Burroughs Award & New York Zoological Society Medal & mention of the Guggenheim Fellowship has been removed from rear flap (small piece missing from lower front panel and smaller losses from head of spine section; slight wear and some spotting on rear panel). An early and uncommon signed variant printing of the 1951 winner of the National Book Award in non-fiction, most likely issued by a small natural science book club (identified by the H. Wolff on copyright page; this unusual book club edition is priced, with sixth state jacket, front page edges cut straight and 8 ½ inches tall boards). Rachel Carson's second book proved amazingly popular for a natural science book written for the general reader. It went immediately into multiple printings and was also printed in large numbers as a Book of the Month Club selection. The book won the National Book Award in 1952 and was also made into a documentary film that won an Academy Award in 1952. The tremendous popularity of Carson's second book had important implications for her future work. The publication of her next book, Silent Spring, was by mainstream publishing house Houghton Mifflin that probably did not anticipate the controversial nature of her new book.
