Spine darkened - heavily patinated and starting to bow a little. Statius' Silvae consisted of 32 poems divided into five books, each book containing a prose preface. The plethora of subjects of the poetry have provided researchers with a wealth of information on Domitian's Rome and Statius' life. Thebaid is a dramatic poem that explores the themes of human ambition, violence, triumph, and catastrophe. It tells the story of the Seven Against Thebes, the battle between the sons of Oedipus for the throne of Thebes - it is believed to have influenced Dante, Chaucer, and possibly Shakespeare.
