xxiv, 607 printed pages. 13 x 19 cm. Original blue cloth, spine ornamentally blocked in gilt, publisher's proprietary decorated endpapers. A volume in the Warne's Chandos Classics Series. This copy comes from Frederck Warne's Property Room (with a "Property Room. NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY" printed label on the front paste down endpaper) and has inserted at the front free endpaper a folded, printed form with ink annotations concerning the detailed publishing history of the edition. There were 2,500 copies of the first edition and over 15,000 copies of the 1878 and subsequent printings. The original total property costs were just over £220 for the first edition. The last recorded issue was of 1,000 copies on April 3rd 1893. Three sets of binding blocks were produced ( in 1876, 1882 & 1892). The information gleaned from the unique inserted document is an intriguing insight into the economics of the late Victorian publishing industry in England. Bookseller Inventory # 4276
