Complete, [7], 104, plus colophon leaf at the back. Magnificently illustrated with 20 tissue guarded, tipped-in color plates in a Pre-Raphaelite style by Keith Henderson and Norman Wilkinson. Number 341 of a limited edition of 500 copies on hand-made Aldwych paper. Silk bookmarker. All edges gilt. Inner gilt triple ruled borders. Signed in gilt "Hatchards 187 Piccadilly" in bottom border of front paste-down endpaper. 19.5 x 24 cm. Contemporary fine full deep red crushed morocco art nouveau binding, with gorgeous patina from over 100 years of handling. Spine in six gilt tooled, lettered, dated and ruled compartments, with five raised bands. Upper and lower covers with blind and gilt tooling, the floriate corner tools, dotted lines and overall effect influenced by the Guild of Women Binders (1898-1904). Keith Henderson OBE RP RSW RWS ROI (1883-1982) was a Scottish painter known for his book illustrations and his poster work for London Transport and the Empire Marketing Board. He had a long professional career that included periods as a war artist in both the First World War, in which he served in the trenches, and in the Second World War.Sir Norman Wilkinson CBE, (1878- 1971) was a British artist who usually worked in oils, watercolors and drypoint. He was primarily a marine painter, but he was also an illustrator, poster artist, and wartime camoufleur. The Romaunt of the Rose is a partial translation into Middle English of the French allegorical poem.
