Stepped black bakelite base (this design was carried over from the 1930s). 12 inches high. The terrestrial globe surmounted by hour circle, within calibrated chromed half meridian, raised on a square stepped black bakelite base in the Art Deco style. Cartouche: "PHILIPS / 10 INCH/ TERRESTRIAL GLOBE/ [scale]/ Printed in Great Britain by George Philip & Son Ltd./ © 1958" Various regions are coloured green or brown, to indicate land relative to sea level. Oceans are coloured light blue, giving an overall nineteenth century appearance to the globe, although it was manufactured in 1958. Ghana is no longer called Ashanti or the Gold Coast (the name changed in 1957) but Guinea is still called French Guinea (the name changed in 1958 officially). Some minor cracks and wear on the globe, particularly along the strip marking the equator. The chrome has some mild pitting along the half meridian. George Philip & Son began as a map and atlas publisher in Liverpool, England in 1834. In 1902, the firm moved premises to London and emerged as one of the leading globe producers of the 20th century.
