Frontispeice, xii, 263 printed pages, plus 3 page appendix at end. Profusely illustrated in black and white. Folding coloured map. All edges gilt. 27.5 x 21 cm. Original full green buckram. Spine with gilt decoration of grapes, gilt lettering and geometric borders at the head and tail. Upper cover with gilt lettering within two distinctive gilt designs of cherubs making and enjoying champagne, all within an elaborate gilt scrolling foliate border. An attractive facsimile reprint of the 1882 first edition in fine condition. Henry Vizetelly was an English publisher whose interest in wines led to him writing several books. "The Wines of the World Characterized & Classed: with some particulars respecting the beers of Europe" was published in 1875 and "Facts About Champagne and Other Sparkling Wines Collected During Numerous Visits to the Champagne and Other Viticultural Districts of France, and the Principal Remaining Wine-Producing Countries of Europe" was published in 1879. He was Wine Juror for Great Britain at the Vienna and Paris Exhibitions of 1873 and 1878. In 1882 he published this "History of Champagne: with notes on the other sparkling wines of France".
