The set comprises: Part I: General History (Survey vol.39); Part II: The Buildings (Survey vol. 40). Two volumes. 1977 and 1980. 4to. Two frontispieces (one colour); drawings in text. xvi, 236 printed pages (including index) plus 56 pages of maps and photos. Two large folding plans in pocket on rear pastedown. xix, 429 printed pages (including index) plus 96 pages of maps and photos including a large folding panorama. Unclipped dust jackets have light wear including rubbing at corners and slight wear at the edges. Volume one has ownership inscription of Francis Shelford, Museum of London, on the front free endpaper. The history of the Grosvenor Estate begins in 1677, with the marriage of the heiress Mary Davies to Sir Thomas Grosvenor, 3rd Baronet (1655 1700). Mary had inherited the manor of Ebury, 500 acres of land north of the Thames to the west of the City of London. This area remained largely untouched by the Grosvenors until the 1720s, when they developed the northern part, now known as Mayfair, around Grosvenor Square. A few generations later, in the 1820s, their focus moved south, to what is now Belgravia, developing Eaton Square, Chester Square, and other famous addresses.
