Publisher's original oatmeal buckram boards with brown title on slightly sunned spine. The upper board has a disturbing picture of the Angel of Death with a reassuring hand on a Tommy's shoulder. (originally issued with a glassine wrapper which is NOT present on this copy). Mark on back cover as shown in photograph. This book, published in January 1930 was of the first impression, following the limited edition - The Middle Parts of Fortune - of the previous year; before the end of that year four further impressions were published. The author of this highly acclaimed novel was Frederic Manning was an Australian poet and novelist; he enlisted in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry in 1915 as a private with the service number 19022; "Her Privates We" is based on his wartime experiences. An undisputed masterpiece of Great War literature and a lasting tribute to all who participated, the book was originally released under the authorship of 'Private 19022'. It has since been championed by such literary greats as Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, T.E. Lawrence, William Boyd and Ernest Hemingway, who described it as "the finest and noblest book of men in war".
