Copper engraved tissue guarded frontispiece, engraved title page, 603, , + 4 pages of publisher's adverts. Two engraved plates. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Floreate inner gilt dentelles. Some scattered foxing throughout. 8 x 12 cm. Contemporary red blind and gilt tooled goatskin. Unsigned but possibly by Vogel. Very slightly stained, & extremely lightly worn. The spine is in six compartments with gilt lettering and fillets, blind tooled central floreate motifs and elaborate gilt borders and the top and foot. Hinges very slightly rubbed. The boards have four circular blind corner pieces with fan shaped tooling radiating towards the central comparment and with blind and double gilt fillet borders. Gilt tooled board edges. The corners have compete and intact intricate floral swag brass mounts. Complete with intricate crucifix and swag decorative brass hinge and catch (marked Brevité) and engraved brass crucifix shaped clasp (maked "L"). The red goatskin and brass decorations are highly tactile with a visual feast created by the patina of minor stains and gentle wear on top of a crimson background. Not located in WorldCat. This text and binding both appear to be uncommon survivors. The 200 year old brass engraved crucifix clasped design elvates this religious book to a special degree. Bookseller Inventory # 4416
