Three parts in two volumes. xxviii + 291 with 14 page unnumbered index at rear; 304 printed pages and 12 page index. Complete with 5 copper engravings after T. Rowlandson by William Hogarth ( some offsetting and even age-toning). 10 x 15 cm. Contemporary half blue calf (somewhat rubbed). Spines with burgundy morocco titling pieces and gilt lettering. Covers with marbled paper over board (corners slightly bumped). Grey's anti-Puritanism showed in his noteworthy edition -first published in 1744- of Samuel Butler's Hudibras, featuring a vast quantity of notes to portray Butler's unflattering targets. However, this edition engendered a new quarrel with William Warburton who had supplied some notes for the edition to a mutual friend, and Warburton claimed that the notes were used without explicit permission, and, in retaliation, called the book an "execrable heap of nonsense"!.
