One of just 500 printed. Portrait frontispiece photograph of Jo Davidson's clay bust of Lawrence and 364 printed pages. Title page states 1929 Privately Printed at lower edge and Florence, Tipografia Giuntina on reverse; It was published posthumously but Lawrence sanctioned this edition before his death. (Ref Roberts Bibliography Third Edition). Dated 1929, and bearing the same imprint as the genuine 1928 First Edition, but these devices were used to obscure the fact that it was published by bookseller Charles Lahr, publisher P. R. Stephenson, and printed by W. Graves in a basement in Euston, the first London edition, in the middle of 1930, protecting the printer and publishers from prosecution. Brown cloth covers with phoenix emblem to top left corner. Lightly tanned endpapers with very minor marginal foxing to some pages throughout. Rear hinge lightly cracked but still firm. Very slight rubbing to head and foot of spine. Lady Chatterley's Lover is the last novel by English author D. H. Lawrence, which was first published privately in 1928, in Italy, and in 1929, in France. Lahr took the risk of distributing the first edition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover (published in 1928 by the Italian bookseller Pino Orioli). Banned in Britain and America, dispatch of the novel proved difficult, and copies were scarce. An unexpurgated edition was not published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960, when it was the subject of a watershed obscenity trial against the publisher Penguin Books, which won the case and quickly sold three million copies. The book was also banned for obscenity in the United States, Canada, Australia, India and Japan. The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical (and emotional) relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex and its use of then-unprintable four-letter words.
