viii, 280 pages. No date but c. 1887. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Scrolling inner gilt dentelles. Mild scattered foxing throughout. 11 x 16 cm. Full contemporary tree calf. Spine in six compartments, with gilt lettered burgundy morocco label, and hand-tooled gilt thistle emblems within floreate and double gilt fillet borders. Top and bottom of spine very slightly rubbed. Covers with scrolling floral gilt borders. Fine example of tree calf decoration with only mildly effected hinges (the acid process of tree calf decoration inevitably weakens and often deteriorates the hinges). This poetry collection is titled and contains Aytoun's [1813-1865] main poetical work. His reputation as a poet rests upon this work. His early poetical contributions were to Blackwood's Magazine and although he was trained as a certified lawyer, his vocation was writing poetry. Beautiful victorian tree-calf binding evocative of autumnal leaves swirling in the October Scottish wind. Bookseller Inventory # 4452
