Title: Light for the valley : a daily memorial ...

Publisher: Paisley : Alex Gardner

Publication Date: 1892

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good

Edition: 1st Edition

(16mo) Near Miniature. 127, [141] pages with a decorative frame of a single rule, a ribbon design and corner fleurons. Bookbinders round green contemporary ticket pasted onto rear paste-down endpaper (Hogarth & Hayes, Keswick, Cumberland. Pencil and cedar goods manufacturers, Southey Hill Pencil Works). All edges gilt. Decorated endpapers. Former owners name crossed out on verso of front free endpaper. No other entries. 7.2 x 11 cm. Mauchline binding of quarter black calf leather with transfer-applied wooden boards; spine with gilt fillets and title; covers comprise of bevelled wooden boards, the front image entitled "Vale of Keswick", the rear , "Keswick Boat Station, Derwentwater" (upper board missing slither of outer edge; some crazing to lacquer and very slight wear). As well as Great Exhibition medals, by 1898 Hogarth & Hayes (who claimed they were established in 1837 this is technically not true as they were Banks, Son & Co at that point) were supplying a number of Royals as well as the Government Offices. Hogarth & Hayes were well known for producing fine pencils that now are rarely found in a complete set. WorldCat locates just two copies of this book (and at least one of the two known copies does not have the Mauchline ware transfers) in the Victoria & Albert Museum and in the National Library of Scotland. A rare book, with a collectable binding and a highly unusual bookbinders ticket perhaps uniquely linking it to a pre-eminent pencil works- a surprising survivor of local history and of hand-made tourist gift ware.
