Engraving of South-West View of St. Luke's Hospital for Lunaticks, in Old Street after Carter and Ellis. Original marbled endpapers. 32 x 57 mm. Original maroon leather Venetian mosaic binding with cream, red, and gold overlays. Complete with matching slipcase. Minuscule damage on lower cover. A similar edition is in the Queen Mary's Dolls' House in Windsor Castle. It was entirely engraved, rather than typeset, an impressive example of 18th-century craftsmanship. St. Luke’s Hospital for Lunatics on Old Street, designed by George Dance the Younger, had only recently opened in 1786 and was considered a palatial architectural landmark of its time, despite its austere interior. It was a charitable institution founded to treat the poor, intended as a more progressive alternative to the older "Bedlam" (Bethlem Royal Hospital). The building stood until 1963, when it was demolished after serving as a Bank of England print works for several decades.
