. Maurice Denton Welch (1915 – 48) was a gay English writer and painter, admired for his vivid prose and precise descriptions. Maiden Voyage is an autobiographical novel and Welch's first published book. The novel split into three sections, each prefaced in the original text with one of Welch's illustrations. It describes a period during the 1930s: his last term at school, and the following weeks living in Shanghai, China, where his father had a business. Apart from Edith Sitwell, (who provided the foreword), the book was praised by E.M. Forster, Gerard Hopkins and Kenneth Clark.
