Circa 1800 ( before the move to 140 Fleet Street in 1808). Unrecorded variant imprint. Text starts on verso of title-page, A6. Complete in 57 printed pages on hand-made chain-linked rag paper. Consistent use of the long 's' associated with the erlier imprints. In this edition it goes from "naughty" to "a good boy, a fair child, a nice book, a neat doll." In the earlier 63 page impression it follows on with ""satchel, summer, shadow", then "animal, family, perfectly", then "history, multiply, presently", then "directly, displeased, disposed", then "gentleman, wheelbarrow, butterfly", then "beautiful, elegance, discover", before "a good boy"&c. Slight offsetting and mild page toning. 47 x 60 mm. Contemporary marbled paper covered boards. White printed oval label with ornately cut edges on front cover but of different design on the back. Inner hinges split. Spine slightly split with basic and old black paper repair. Second of 16 volumes originally sold in a sycamore bookcase box divided into four compartments with red paper lining, with a label reading "Sold by John Harris, successor to E.Newberry, at the corner of St. Paul's Churchyard". Welsh (History, page 74) attributed Jean Jacques Rousseau and the didactic school of philosophy's influence on this publication - one of the earliest books published for children, and designed to train their intellect and morals.
