For more than twenty years, French encyclopedian Pierre Versins had collected together a very important collection of science fiction works to compile his Encyclopédie de l'utopie, des voyages extraordinaires et de la science-fiction. In 1976, he donated his literary assets to the city of Yverdon-les-Bains and the Maison d'Ailleurs was founded, initially only occupying a three-room flat. The municipality of Yverdon-les-Bains in 1989 installed the Maison d'Ailleurs in the renovated old prison, built in 1806 in the centre of the city. The journalist Roger Gaillard (1947 2010) was its curator and the new museum opened in 1991. In 2003, collector Jean-Michel Margot decided to donate one of the most important to Jules Verne collections (about 20,000 documents, including rare posters dating from the end of the nineteenth century, hand-written notes, as well as the complete collection of the Voyages Extraordinaires, owned by the granddaughter of Pierre-Jules Hetzel, Jules Verne's publisher) to the Maison d'Ailleurs. WorldCat lists just three copies at Liverpool, Lausanne and Neuchâtel. Bookseller Inventory # 4337
