At the time, these "squat and handy volumes" were innovative for placing artistic illustrations on an equal footing with the text, capturing the imagination of children more effectively than traditional textbooks. Copies in the original printed boards are considerably less common than those bound in red or black roan which makes surviving copies relatively rare. The contemporary vernacular tartan binding is also remarkable and highly collectable.
