Lacks leaf A1 (blank), Dd4-Dd5 (?), & last leaf of index. 4 copper plate engravings. Contemporary blind stamped calf binding with 18th century leather re-back. Worn at the edges. ESTC 6063052. 3 copies (UK), 1 copy (USA). This copy has an ownership inscription, is dated & was owned in 1718 by Thomas Ayre, fourth generation Freeholder of of Worthy Farm (with Titham/Colson) in Devon. The 200 acre farm was one of the largest in the area, assessed by the Land Tax Return as having a value of over £5. It is now the site of Glastonbury Festival. Several pages in this book have Thomas Ayre's contemporary ink notes in the margins. Andrew Tooke (16731732) was an English scholar, headmaster of Charterhouse School, Gresham Professor of Geometry, Fellow of the Royal Society and translator of Pomey's original Pantheon, a standard textbook for a century on Greek mythology, and first published three years earlier in 1698.
