Some contemporary bibliographic notes in pencil on title page and verso of front free endpaper (with a misattribution of this particular work to Robert Bridges). Pages evenly toned. Hinges split but firm. 13.5 x 19.5 cm. Original brown cloth, spine with gilt lettering and decorative publisher's initials (Slightly worn at head & tail). Bevelled maroon boards with embossed double black fillet and black guilloche borders around central gilt arabesque lotus motif (corners very slightly worn). William Cox Bennett (1820-95) was a polymath: an English poet and songwriter; also a watchmaker and journalist; Bennett was a member of the London council of the Education League; notably, Bennett was instrumental in securing Liberal MP, William Ewart Gladstone's return to Parliament for the borough of Greenwich, 1868, on becoming the Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.
