Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine and gilt cartouche of rutting stags on upper cover. Upper hinge slightly weak. Prelims very slightly foxed. All corners and edges very slightly worn. With flourishing pencil ownership signature and bookplate/visiting card of Major C.M. Dobell, Royal Welch Fusiliers (1869-1954). Written by William Kennedy, a Royal Navy officer who eventually became the Commander-in-Chief of the Nore. This book explores Kennedy's time as the commander of the Druid and as senior officer on the Newfoundland Coast. Describing Haiti Kennedy says that he "had come amongst a race of people indulging in cannibalism, secret poisoners, sorcerer, ghouls, child-slayers, and serpent-worshippers.the immediate effect of Voudouxism has been disastrous to this country.". Kennedy describes Voodoo practices in great detail.
