Original grey gren cloth with black lettering. Spine somewhat age-toned. Covers slightly stained and corners slightly bumped. Front cover lettering a tiny bit worn in places. These are the first two in a series of at least ten numbers that have been reprinted & this edition is possibly a 1900 reprint, priced 4/6 on the front cover. Maria Kraus-Boelte (1836-1918), educational reformer, was one of a remarkable group of German immigrants who played a major role in creating both the kindergarten and the profession of kindergarten teaching in the United States. The early history of the kindergarten recognises the contributions of Kraus-Boelte, Friedrich Froebel, Susan Elizabeth Blow, and John Kraus. Named after German educator Friedrich Froebel, the Froebel Society began in 1874. Professor Joseph Payne and Caroline Bishop founded the London Froebel Society in 1874 with Adelaide Manning amongst the early members. Caroline Bishop was advising the School board on the use of Kindergarten methods and Manning presented a paper on the same subject. The following year the society became national.
