An elderly butler is on a five-day motoring trip through the West Country in the 1950s. The climax of his journey is to be a reunion with his former housekeeper. This 1989 Booker Prize-winner attempts to capture a period in British history and draw a portrait of a man in old age.

Source material for the 1993 British-American drama film, directed by James Ivory and starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. The book was awarded the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1989 and the movie was similarly well-beloved as both a critical and commercial success, garnering eight Academy Award nominations. Ishiguro was selected for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017.
