384 printed pages. Tight and bright copy with slight age-toning to endpapers and spotting to fore edge. 15 x 22 cm. Original full blue cloth. Very minimal wear to foot of spine. Original unclipped dustwrapper printed in red and black and, unusually, the text continues on the verso of the dustwrapper (that has been strengthened from the underside with brown paper tape at some time in the distant past). Spine has very slight markings to tail and head, a very little age-toned. Velikovsky (1895-1979) believed celestial mechanics were interrupted by electromagnetic forces causing catastrophic close contacts with other planets (principally Venus and Mars) in ancient history. In positioning Velikovsky among catastrophists such as Hans Bellamy, Ignatius Donnelly, and Johann Gottlieb Radlof, the British astronomers Victor Clube and Bill Napier noted ". Velikovsky is not so much the first of the new catastrophists .; he is the last in a line of traditional catastrophists going back to mediaeval times and probably earlier." This book concerns the periodic close contacts with a "cometary Venus" (which had been ejected from Jupiter) allegedly leading to the Exodus events (c. 1500 BC) and Joshua's subsequent "sun standing still" (Joshua 10:12 13) incident.
